Crazy Good
I recently attended an event at the Upstairs. It was to bring awareness to the plight of the hummingbird in Ohio. Poor birds :( I was extremely upset to find out that Hummingbird was on the menu! What kind of establishment puts hummingbird on the menu on the say of a hummingbird awareness dinner. The only good thing I will say was that the hummingbird was well cooked and I would get it again, but NEVER during a hummingbird awareness dinner!

I have never had a sub-par meal at this place. Try to go on prime rib night during the summer. They cook it in their deck area and it is out of this world!

Worst Place in Austintown for Steak
It used to be Brudder's that turned my stomach at the mention of its name. Now it's The Upstairs. It's been banned. I've given them 3 chances to redeem themselves and each time in only gets worse. Maybe a steak isn't what I should be ordering, but you can't call yourself 'fine dining' and not cook a good cut of meat. I'll take any food chain's cheap sirloin over a 'strip' steak from the Upstairs. They should be ashamed to let food go out that looks like that.

I have had good luck here. The food has been excellent. It seems the owner is always there asking if everything is OK. Seems like a nice guy. I'd prefer eating downstairs. It's more peaceful. I would continue to eat here.

My husband says they have the best ribs & sauce in town. I enjoy the vegetarian mideastern fare. Previous comments about cigar smoke no longer valid. This is where we take our out of town guests for a great meal & atmosphere.

Worth the effort
It's been a short week, just after Memorial Day, and we're ready for a Friday dinner-out. I've been reading about the Upstairs with amazement ... cigars, ogling, and gauntlets; but really nothing bad about the actual restaurant or food. We have to give it a try.

Upon arrival, we enter through the front entrance, into the bar, and are politely shown to the side staircase which accesses the restaurant. The building has a side entrance directly to the stairs, but it wasn’t obvious from the outside (or we didn’t bother to look). Anyhow, we made it to the dinning area and there’s the legendary bar, well populated with mostly guys, all looking like they were right at home and ready for action; this could be the crowd. The hostess escorts us past the bar and to our table, completely uneventful. I think we may even have been a little disappointed, but not by much.

The restaurant is located along Mahoning Avenue in a retail section across from a car dealership. The atmosphere is better on the inside than the outside. It’s well decorated with paintings lining most of the walls; tables are all covered with white tablecloths, complete with cloth napkins. They are placed a little closely, not too cozy and with ample room to move around, but we could probably eavesdrop on the next table. By the way, the tables seemed a bit oversized, which was a nice touch; we had plenty of room during dinner.

It’s a Friday night, early evening, and I expect the place to be packed, with standing room only, but they are only about seventy percent full. It must be the recession; it’s certainly not the food, it was quite good. We both had fairly traditional dinners. She had the Flat-Iron special, I had a Fillet, and we split a Shrimp appetizer. I think the Shrimp might have been a house specialty. It had a sauce that made it worth the price of admission. There was a bit of a wait before the dinners arrived, but we soon found out why, I think the entrees got a little extra attention. Both were well presented and portions were as-expected. My Fillet included the mushroom side-order, giving it a nice finishing touch. It was very good; unfortunately, her Flat-Iron steak was a bit disappointing. She would recommend ordering something different from the menu.

Overall, it was a very satisfying dining experience; fairly pricey, but well worth it. Waitresses were polite and helpful (albeit in quite a hurry); tables were well attended, complete with a short visit from the manager. As we were leaving, we took a moment to look around; it has a nicely arranged outside patio area for the adventurous. On the way out, a fellow at the bar complimented me on my shirt, as he had the same style; we must have both gotten the memo.

My daughter was in town from New York last week. My daughter (who works at an upscale restaurant) could not believe how great the food was. I had to agree with her. I will be going back soon.

Always very good
We try to get into the Upstairs at least once every other month. The staff is always very good and so is the food. We take people from out of town and they all think it is outstanding. The mediterranean is great and the other daily speacials go from great to wonderful. And, the extensive wine menu is another plus. Joe, the owner always walks around making sure everyone is happy and satisfied. Someone said earlier that this is a Youngstown classic and they hit it right on the money.

I love the Upstairs! Everyone their is so nice! I am of the belief if you don't like your meal send it back before you eat half of it! Joe would not want you to eat something that your not happy with! Where else can you go for dinner and pick out a bottle at minimum price and not pay the usual Restaurant mark up?? Their selection of wines runs the gamit! If you like Sweet Ohio wines then they have it! if you like a great Cab. they have a nice choice, whatever your choice just let them know and there qualified staff from Dan to John will be happy to help you find what's right for you!If you'd like a glass of wine by the glass they have a wide variety too! You name it and they will aim to please!

Great place for wine & food.
Went to the Upstairs for the second time last friday and had such a great time. We had a reservation for 8pm but the table was not ready yet (very busy) so we found a spot in their Wine Bar downstairs. The cute little wine server helped my wife find a bottle of wine for dinner and suggested trying out their menu. We had a delicious VooDoo Shrimp with a drink and then our table was ready. We had a great dinner and our waitress was friendly. I do agree that their bar upstairs is crowded and smokey but the Wine Bar is non smoking and has a full bar of wine & liquer and is a great place for an after dinner drink or to just hang out for the night. We plan to dine here often.

Well I still think it's a great place and again for all of you who don't like a crowded place then you need to go down the street and find an emty parking lot at the closest place. Maybe there's areason it's empty?? You also have another choice go out earlier to beat the rush! They are now serving small meals down stairs and my correction from my last review! You can get other drinks besides Wine, Although with all those great wines there in front of you and your able to buy a bottle and you don't have to pay the usual Restaurant mark up, your crazy not to enjoy your favorite bottle of wine! Besides Dan's expertise you may find John Webster there to help you choose and excellent bottle of Wine too! Join them both on Thursday evening's when they have "FLIGHT NIGHT!"

Upstairs worth the walk
OMG delicious. The food is as good as in NYC, Pitts, or Cleve and at an affordable price. Yes it cost more than a buffet that some GM workers eat at but well worth the quality and service. A must have is the hot peppers before the meal. Try the famous Boston Scrod or you can't miss with any of the daily specials. Had saffron rice that was beyond any in the world. The wine selection is awesome too with a wine carryout below. Dress comfy but in your nicest jeans if you must. Go, go, and go soon as I can not imagine eating at another Olive Garden one more time. Plus the artwork that adorns the dining room is so interesting that you are drawn to viewing around the room.

I read alot of the reviews, and I feel, that if you don't like a crowded place don't go on their busiest nights! If you want Non-smoking then you'll love the Winedown Wine Bar! Soon they will be serving food downstairs too! They do have some light things that go very well with your Wine! Sorry thou if you want hard liquor I think they only serve it Upstairs! As far as guys or gals hanging out in the bar area looking for a pick-up! You'll find that at almost any bar! In my eyes it's a very classy Wine Bar! And its about time we non-smokers had a place to go enjoy a good glass of wine without having to put up with second hand smoke! Great job Joe,Dan & Candy!

This place is an excellent dining establishment with many different items to choose from on the menu. The wine list is sumptious (try the Deux Amis) and offers a variety that nearly rivals Alberini's in Niles. After dining on our Shish-ke-bobs, my friend and I found the bar crowd to be very stimulating and receptive to chat. I will definitely visit the Upstairs more frequently.

Hometown Flavor
What better place to celebrate Y-Town's past than to come here to eat. It's smokey like back in the day when the mills were going, Italian food like you used to have in the Briar Hill area and wine galore like what they used to make in the Smokey Hollow area (only this vino is legal). Also, they serve beer for the discerning mill worker's taste. Last, but not least, the joint attracts lots of questionable looking characters, reminiscent of the old mob days. What more could a die-hard Youngstowner ask for?

A Youngstown cornerstone
First, the atmosphere; you live in Youngstown, OH. If you're uncomfortable with loud and obnoxious people, maybe its time to move. Second, the prices; This isn't Perkins, or the local sub joint. If you consider yourself a food connoisseur, then cost should be a non-issue. And if youre dining on a budget, Im sure the staff would be more than happy to recommend something to fit your pocket book. And third, the food; Some of the finest food anywhere. And if youve had a bad meal, then its your own fault for not speaking up. Im sure the staff would go out of their way and do whatever they could to insure your experience was enjoyable. The bottom line; for the area...or the entire region for that matter, the Upstairs has the most entertaining and original atmosphere, the friendliest staff, most gracious host, and delicious menu you'll find. The owners continue to strive for excellence by providing the best dining experience possible. And if you don't like it, there's always Taco Bell for your discerning palette.

Food was decent for a neighborhood bar type of venue. I had the prime rib and wife had one of the chicken dishes. Great selection of wine. Beer was cold. Food was typical of what y-town people think is "good food", but the used car salesmen and want to be 22 yr olds at the bar take the cake. My wife went to the restroom and by the time she got back to the table she felt violated. Of course when I came out to the bar to "acess" the situation all the "salesmen" kept there mouths shut. Typical, may be back when I get bored.

If you REALLY know food-you'll understand the real value at the Upstairs. An ever-changing and seasonal menu means the best food at the time. I think most of the "OOH the men are looking at me" are a little to obvious with their need for attention. You can eat in a casual surrounding and walk out with money left-unlike the other Austintown "seasonal" eatery.

Rating: 2 stars Author: Ron Posted: 2005-12-24 08:32:48
This was the first time I tried Middle Eastern food, and the Maza was pretty good. My date had one of the salads and said it was 'alright'. Although the food was acceptable, the atmosphere was less than what I would expect from a place that is trying to present an upscale presentation. The people in the bar greatly detracted from what is a potentially 'fine restaurant'. My date felt uneasy with the men leering at her as we walked through the bar to the dining room.

trying to be objective
The menu is ambitious - and the food I tried was good. However, the cigar smoke from the bar interferes with the taste of the food - the noise from the bar area disrupts conversation at the table, and the wait service was indifferent. If this establishment wants to be taken seriously as a source of fine dining, they must address these problems. They have too many first time/last time customers.

Medocre At Best
The filet mignon (medium rare) I had wasn't as juicy as other places I've eaten at. My wife said her Santa Fe Chicken was a little bland for being presented as a southwestern spiced dish. Their main business seems to be a "pick-up" bar for married men.

Seen Better
Service was great, but the food was so-so. If you're looking for a place to take the spouse, this is not the place to be. I wouldn't make an effort to go back.

Our clothes smelled like burnt cow manure when we left there, because of the cigars. Couldn't really enjoy the full flavor of the food, although it seemed decent, because of the smoke odor. Waitresses provided excellent service. One of the cigar smokers at the bar tried hitting on my wife as we left, though. We won't be back.

Too much smoke & noise
Food was good, but the smoke (especially cigar smoke!) and the noise from the bar spoiled the meal. Will not be returning to this restaurant.

haven't been back
Felt that this was more of a place to drink than to eat. Don't like to run the 'bar gauntlet' to reach the tables. Have to say the staff was friendly, though.

what is up with the cigars!!
The food at the upstairs is spoiled by the overwhelming cigar and cigarette smoke at the bar. The owner has to separate those before he loses his most loyal non smoking customers. A wall divider might be the answer, but until then, I will choose another fine dining establishment in the area.

Legal Assistant
The atmosphere is wonderfully aesthetic which simply enhances your dining experience - which dining is an experience when you select the Upstairs. Joe-Joe is without a doubt a most gracious host and truly appreciates you selecting his restaurant to dine and conversate...

The Cigars hurt
Food is not bad but whats with all the cigars? Go non-smoking and send those guys to Oscars. Won't go back.

Went there for the 1st time a few weeks ago. The place was packed. They do take reservations, though. We ate at the bar which could have used a bit more ventilation. I had the "burbon chicken" which was too sweet and needed seasoning. I expected a bit more Cajun-style to the dish. The side of asparagus was a joke.

Great wine List
Upstairs and the Wine Down has a great selection of wines. I go there sometimes just for a glass of wine. Of course don't forget about their speciality, Middle Eastern food! Yum.
